Agricultural expert welcomes FRA Maize price increase.
LUSAKA – An agricultural expert has lauded the Zambian government's recent decision to increase the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize buying price, a move anticipated to significantly uplift the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the nation. The FRA, a critical institution for national food security, has adjusted its price for a 50-kilogram bag of maize from K340 to K347, signaling a commitment to ensuring equitable returns for producers. Dr. Oliver Bulaya Kandela, the agricultural expert who offered the commendation, highlighted that this price increment reflects the government's understanding of the substantial investments farmers make in production, including farm inputs and operational costs. He emphasized that the revised floor price is poised to bolster farmers' confidence in maize cultivation, thereby stimulating greater investment and agricultural activity throughout Zambia. Maize is the country's staple food and accounts for a significant portion of its agricultural output, making such price decisions pivotal for both food security and economic stability. While welcoming the adjustment, Dr. Kandela raised a pertinent concern regarding the timing of the announcement, suggesting it came later than ideal. He stressed the importance of an earlier price declaration to enable farmers to make informed marketing and planting decisions for future seasons. A predictable and fair pricing framework is crucial for fostering a resilient and productive agricultural sector, allowing farmers adequate time for planning and resource allocation. Furthermore, Dr. Kandela cautioned the FRA to adequately prepare for the anticipated surge in maize deliveries at its depots. The higher buying price is likely to attract more farmers, necessitating robust logistical arrangements, including sufficient storage capacity, adequate staffing, efficient transport, and streamlined handling systems. These preparations are vital to prevent congestion, delays, and ensure a smooth purchas
