TEACHING SERVICE COMMISSION SUSPENDS 2025 TEACHER RECRUITMENT

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has announced the suspension of the 2,000-teacher recruitment exercise that commenced last year, throwing thousands of expectant educators into a state of anxiety. According to Commission Chairperson Daphne Chimuka, the halt is necessitated by the need to restructure the intake numbers and accommodate unemployed teachers identified directly during presidential campaign rallies by President Hakainde Hichilema. District Human Resource Management Committees had already finalized selections for the initial 2,000 positions, but the new directive has forced a review of the roadmap. Ms. Chimuka clarified that the beneficiaries of the presidential directive will not cancel out the public service recruitment entirely, but will instead be absorbed into this year's broader intake of 3,500 teachers. This adjustment is expected to scale up the total volume of employment opportunities within the education sector. However, the sudden policy shift has raised operational concerns regarding the transparency and predictability of public sector recruitment timelines, especially for candidates who spent months navigating the decentralized selection stages. To ensure integrity, the Commission has instituted stringent vetting protocols before any appointment letters are issued. Working alongside Provincial Administrations, the Teaching Council of Zambia will verify professional registrations, while the Examination Council of Zambia will authenticate academic credentials. This multi-layered screening aims to curb administrative malpractices and prevent unverified personnel from sneaking onto the government payroll.
