Where Is Kafwaya? Wife's Desperate Appeal as Opposition Figure Remains Missing
The wife of Mutotwe Kafwaya, a prominent opposition figure and former Information Minister, has made a desperate public appeal to the Zambian government: "Tell me where my husband is, dead or alive." Kafwaya has not been seen publicly since the post-election period, with opposition figures alleging he was shot twice in the presence of Brian Mundubile. The government has not confirmed or denied the shooting allegations. The Tonse Alliance, of which Kafwaya was a key member, had earlier alleged that security forces conducted a raid and that Kafwaya was shot. The government dismissed these allegations. The case has become one of the most troubling aspects of the post-election period, with human rights organisations calling for transparency about Kafwaya's condition and whereabouts. President Hichilema, in his inaugural address, called for peace and unity but did not directly address the Kafwaya situation. Opposition supporters say the silence speaks volumes. The European Union Election Observation Mission had raised concerns about campaign-related violence and political intimidation during the election period.
