Mundubile Rejects Election Results, Says He Does Not Accept Outcome
POLITICSBy BBC Africa — BBC News Africa
Opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has declared that he does not accept the official results of Zambia's 2026 general election, in which the Electoral Commission declared Hakainde Hichilema the winner with 60.7% of the vote. BBC Africa reported that "Zambia is at a crossroads" as Mundubile refuses to accept the outcome. The NRPUP leader and his running mate Makebi Zulu subsequently sought refuge at a United Nations agency in Lusaka. Mundubile's rejection centres on allegations of result manipulation, with several NRPUP parliamentary candidates also claiming their votes were swapped to favour UPND candidates. In the hotly contested Matero constituency, losing candidate Patrick Salubusa disputed the outcome after UPND's Alex Sakala was declared winner with 24,129 votes to Salubusa's 18,614. The Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) chapter, however, stated that ECZ results showed "100% integrity," contradicting the opposition's claims. Under Zambian law, Mundubile has 7 days from the date of declaration to file a petition with the Constitutional Court. If no petition is filed, the inauguration proceeds within 14 days of declaration. The European Union Election Observation Mission acknowledged concerns about campaign-related violence and the media environment but confirmed that candidates were able to campaign through rallies and public meetings.
