Police say Kafwaya died in a shootout. Mundubile says he was shot in his own bedroom. Both versions can't be true.

## The official account Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says a joint task force, including the Drug Enforcement Commission, arrived at a Kabulonga residence used by NRPUP candidate Brian Mundubile at around 19:30 on August 14. In his words: "Upon arrival at the premises, the team was met with gunfire and resistance from unknown individuals and in the process the task force returned fire, during which one unidentified male person was fatally wounded." Police say the operation was intelligence-led, targeting individuals "suspected of posing a threat to national security" who had reportedly been monitored since November 2023, more than two years before this election. The wounded man was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. He was identified five days later, on August 19, as Kafwaya, former MP for Lunte, through family identification. ## Where the official account strains Two things in that account do not sit easily together. First, police describe being "met with gunfire" on arrival, language that implies an active exchange with armed resistance, yet a separate report of the same raid describes the task force having "apprehended Kafwaya and other people", arrest language, not the language of a firefight. Second, nobody has explained why a former Cabinet minister and sitting-recognisable public figure was logged at hospital as an "unidentified male" rather than identified on the spot. Police have also not released any ballistics information establishing whose weapon fired the fatal shot. ## Mundubile's account Mundubile describes a different scene entirely: an unprovoked assault, with officers firing live ammunition inside the house while his family, including his young twin daughters, sheltered from it. "My colleague was shot at in my presence," he said. "This was not politics." Separately, his campaign has said Kafwaya was shot inside his own bedroom.
