ZAMRA, NHRA sign clinical trials MoU
The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and the National Health Research Authority (NHRA) have formally entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to overhaul and streamline the landscape of clinical trials in the country. Announced in Lusaka, the collaboration brings together Zambia's two principal regulatory bodies governing pharmaceuticals and health research with the core objective of eliminating administrative redundancies and expediting trial approvals without compromising safety standards. Speaking during the signing ceremony, ZAMRA Director-General Makomani Siyanga emphasized that the partnership will significantly reduce historical bottlenecks that have often slowed down the initiation of crucial medical research. By harmonizing regulatory requirements between ZAMRA and the NHRA, the agreement facilitates joint inspections, coordinated medicine safety monitoring, and the seamless sharing of critical regulatory information. Mr. Siyanga noted that this integrated approach is an essential stepping stone in Zambia’s broader strategic drive to attain the World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level Three status, which will eventually open up lucrative regional and global markets for locally manufactured pharmaceutical products. Echoing these sentiments, NHRA Chief Executive Officer Professor Victor Chalwe stressed that the framework guarantees robust safeguards for human participants involved in clinical investigations. Professor Chalwe pointed out that as global pharmaceutical companies and international research institutions increasingly look toward Africa for clinical data, Zambia must present a regulatory environment that is both highly efficient and fiercely ethical. The MoU addresses previous overlapping mandates that often left researchers navigating separate approval pathways, a duplication of effort that frequently frustrated both domestic and international trial sponsors.
