The renewable energy landscape in Zambia has received a significant boost following the announcement of an additional US$11.5 million investment in Africa GreenCo by its key existing shareholders, the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and Impact Fund Denmark (IFDK). This capital injection underscores continued confidence in GreenCo’s pioneering role as an intermediary power trader, designed to inject private sector dynamism into a historically state-dominated electricity market. Operating through its Lusaka-based subsidiary, GreenCo Power Services, the firm acts as a creditworthy buyer of electricity generated by independent power producers (IPPs), subsequently channeling clean energy to utilities, commercial and industrial offtakers, and regional networks within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The latest funding tranche will be channeled toward strengthening the company’s crucial working capital and liquidity buffers, enabling it to financially underpin an expanded portfolio of renewable energy projects. This development comes at a critical juncture for Zambia, which has faced severe energy deficits exacerbated by recurrent climate shocks, droughts, and heavy reliance on hydroelectric generation through the state-owned utility, ZESCO. By diversifying the energy mix through targeted private investments in solar and other renewables, the government aims to build a more resilient power infrastructure capable of supporting industrial growth and job creation. GreenCo’s intermediary model mitigates off-taker risk, addressing one of the primary historical barriers that has discouraged private capital from flowing freely into African renewable energy infrastructure. Industry stakeholders have widely praised the transaction as a model for catalytic climate finance in developing economies. With regulatory backing secured locally and membership in the SAPP firmly established, GreenCo is uniquely positioned to position Lusaka as a burgeoning hub for re
