Three African wild dog brothers left their Zambian pack in 2025; eight months later, they had travelled 4,126 km, the longest recorded dispersal by an African mammal
In an extraordinary feat of endurance and survival, three African wild dog brothers have etched their names into conservation history by completing the longest recorded dispersal by any land mammal in Africa. Originating from the Mayukuyuku Pack in Zambia's iconic Kafue National Park, the trio embarked on an epic 4,126-kilometer trek across the Zambian landscape. Their grueling nine-month odyssey, meticulously tracked by researchers using GPS collars, culminated in the Luangwa Valley, showcasing both the incredible physical capabilities of the species and the complex realities of modern conservation. Upon reaching maturity at three years of age, the brothers followed a natural biological imperative known as dispersal. In wild dog societies, young adults leave their birth packs to search for unrelated mates and establish new breeding territories, a process vital for maintaining genetic diversity among dwindling populations. However, the path chosen by the Mayukuyuku brothers was far from straightforward. Rather than taking a direct route, their journey forced them to navigate a mosaic of protected areas, game management zones, bustling roadways, and human-dominated fringes near major urban centers like Kitwe, Ndola, and Kabwe. Data published in the journal Ecology by lead author Prof. Scott Creel of Montana State University, alongside collaborators from the Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP) and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), revealed the sheer adaptability of the animals. The trio repeatedly altered course to circumvent urban sprawl, major reservoirs, and physical barriers, demonstrating a high degree of spatial intelligence. While their straight-line distance from start to finish was roughly 419 kilometers, their actual cumulative path length swelled to an unprecedented 4,126 kilometers before they finally settled in the Luano Game Management Area near the Great Rift Escarpment. Yet, this triumph highlights a sobering narrative regarding wi
