Eastern strengthens disaster preparedness
The Eastern Provincial Administration is ramping up its disaster risk reduction strategies, with senior officials emphasizing a proactive posture to protect local communities from recurring climatic shocks. Speaking on recent regional resilience initiatives, Eastern Province Assistant Secretary Clement Chilembo stated that authorities are tightening coordination frameworks to minimise potential loss of life and property as weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable. The push for enhanced preparedness comes on the heels of varying weather extremes that have impacted parts of Zambia, testing local response mechanisms across multiple districts. Mr. Chilembo highlighted that provincial structures are working closely with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and other key stakeholders to ensure early warning systems are effectively communicated down to grassroots levels. Local disaster management committees have been tasked with auditing risk-prone areas, particularly flood-prone river valleys and zones susceptible to localized environmental degradation. By shifting from a reactive relief model to anticipatory risk management, the administration aims to safeguard rural livelihoods, agricultural yields, and critical public infrastructure. Agriculture remains the backbone of Eastern Province, making food security and rural resilience central components of the enhanced preparedness strategy. Authorities are encouraging farming communities to adopt climate-smart practices, such as water harvesting, early maturity crop varieties, and strategic grain reserves, to buffer against erratic rainfall patterns.
