UN nuclear agency pledges continued support during Lusaka visit
Senior officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the Ministry of Technology and Science in Lusaka on Monday, with talks covering cancer care and radiation medicine, nuclear energy, equipment, training and regulatory capacity. The delegation was led by Gashaw Wolde, the IAEA's Acting Director for the Division for Africa, accompanied by Project Management Officer Amal Elrefaei. A ministry planning official thanked the agency for its support. Dr Larry Mweetwa, a director at the ministry, thanked the IAEA for equipment support in the previous and current year, saying the benefits reach cultural institutions and universities. Mr Wolde called Zambia a long-standing partner and commended its progress on international instruments, safety infrastructure, training and nuclear power infrastructure. He stressed the importance of a strong national regulator and robust radiation safety systems, and noted Zambia's contribution to the African Regional Cooperative Agreement (AFRA). **Source:** Xinhua, 19 October.
