The Rural Electrification Authority (REA), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has marked a significant milestone in Southern Province by registering 13,286 electricity connections under the Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) subsidy programme. This aggressive drive is structured to alleviate the heavy financial burdens that have historically restricted rural and peri-urban households from plugging into the national grid. By slashing standard connection costs down to an affordable flat rate of K300 from previous highs exceeding K4,800, the initiative is effectively democratizing access to clean energy across marginalized regions. The ASCENT programme, backed by substantial multi-lateral financing and domestic resource mobilization, represents a cornerstone of the government's broader strategy to enhance energy inclusion. Southern Province's robust registration numbers reflect a high demand and readiness among local communities to embrace grid electrification. Local authorities and traditional leaders have played an instrumental role in mobilizing residents, ensuring that remote homesteads and small-scale entrepreneurs within the stipulated 30-metre radius of low-voltage distribution lines are aware of and take advantage of the heavily subsidized fees. The REA has emphasized that equitable distribution across provinces remains a priority, ensuring that rural populations are not left behind in the national transition toward sustainable energy access. As implementation scales up, both the REA and ZESCO Limited face the logistical task of matching this overwhelming r
