LUSAKA – President Hakainde Hichilema has officially declared Tuesday, June 9th, a Day of National Mourning across Zambia, in solemn tribute to the passing of Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV of the Ngoni people. The Head of State further announced that the esteemed traditional leader, who reigned for an impressive 44 years, will be accorded an official funeral, a gesture reflecting the profound respect and recognition of his immense contributions to the nation. The announcement, made from State House, signifies the government's acknowledgment of the pivotal role traditional leaders play in fostering national unity, preserving cultural heritage, and guiding their communities. Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV, born Pontino Jere, ascended to the throne in 1980 and became a towering figure not only within the Ngoni community but also across Zambia's diverse ethnic landscape. His long reign was marked by efforts to promote peace, development, and the rich cultural traditions of the Ngoni people, whose annual Nc'wala traditional ceremony is a highlight on the national cultural calendar.
