LUSAKA – The Zambian government today reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to the principles of African unity, sustainable development, and enhanced regional cooperation, as the nation joined the rest of the continent in commemorating Africa Day. This annual observance, marking the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, now the African Union (AU), serves as a powerful reminder of the continent's shared history, struggles, and aspirations for a prosperous future. Speaking on the occasion, a government spokesperson underscored Zambia's historical role in the liberation movements across Africa and its continued dedication to pan-African ideals. "Zambia has always been a beacon of unity and a strong advocate for the self-determination of African peoples," the spokesperson stated. "Our commitment to the African Union's Agenda 2063, which envisions a prosperous and peaceful Africa, remains resolute. We believe that through collective effort, we can overcome challenges such as poverty, climate change, and conflicts, paving the way for inclusive growth and stability." The commemoration of Africa Day holds particular significance for Zambia, a country that hosted numerous liberation movements and played a pivotal role in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid. This historical legacy continues to inform Zambia's foreign policy, which prioritizes regional integration through bodies like the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
