Brian Mundubile is Not A Factor, We Are Just Patrolling — Copperbelt Police Chief Yuyi Mwala

LUSAKA – Copperbelt Police Commissioner Yuyi Mwala has categorically refuted allegations from opposition figures, notably Brian Mundubile, that the heightened police presence in the province is a deliberate attempt to stifle political activities. Speaking to the press in Ndola yesterday, Commissioner Mwala stated unequivocally that the police operations are standard procedure, driven by the mandate to ensure public safety and peace, rather than any political agenda. “These claims are baseless and unfounded,” Commissioner Mwala declared, addressing the swirling speculation that has gripped the Copperbelt political landscape. “The Zambia Police Service is a professional, non-partisan institution. Our officers are deployed based on intelligence assessments and the need to maintain law and order, especially in areas prone to public gatherings or potential disturbances. To suggest that our patrols are aimed at any individual, including Mr. Mundubile, is a misrepresentation of our duties.” The Commissioner further elaborated that the police presence, which has been noticeable in several key urban centres across the Copperbelt, is part of a broader strategy to combat crime and ensure adherence to public order regulations. He highlighted that such operations are common during periods of increased public activity, regardless of political affiliations. “We are just patrolling, as is our duty. Mr. Mundubile is not a factor in our operational planning. Our focus remains on the security and well-being of all citizens in the Copperbelt Province,” Mwala asserted, underscoring the police's commitment to impartiality. Opposition leaders, however, have voiced concerns that the increased police visibility is a tactic to intimidate political opponents and restrict their freedom of assembly and expression. Mr. Mundubile, a prominent figure in the opposition, reportedly suggested that the police actions were a direct response to his recent engagements with constituents in the region.
