LUSAKA – The Zambian government has moved swiftly to address and dispel circulating allegations concerning the role of the Zambia Army in the nation's electoral processes. Chief Government Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Media, Mr. Thabo Kawana, unequivocally stated that the army's involvement is strictly confined to providing lawful support when such assistance is officially requested by civilian authorities. This clarification comes amidst unconfirmed reports and social media speculation that had cast aspersions on the integrity and neutrality of the military, particularly targeting Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey. Mr. Kawana emphasised that the Zambia Army, a professional and disciplined institution, operates under the clear mandate of the Constitution and relevant statutes. Its primary role is to defend the territorial integrity of the nation and to support civil authorities in maintaining law and order, particularly during emergencies or when civilian capacity is deemed insufficient. He reiterated that any deployment during elections would be in strict adherence to established legal frameworks, ensuring that such support is non-partisan, impartial, and solely aimed at facilitating a peaceful and secure electoral environment. The government's proactive stance in addressing these allegations is seen as an effort to safeguard public trust in state institutions and to prevent the erosion of confidence in the democratic process.
