UNZA closure paves way for speedy works

The Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, has stated that the early closure of the University of Zambia (UNZA) is a "blessing in disguise" as it will allow for the rapid rehabilitation of the institution's sewer infrastructure. UNZA Vice-Chancellor Boniface Namangala announced an early recess from April 17 to May 22, 2026, though students with midyear exams will have a study break. The rehabilitation project, which began after the government released K23 million to address sanitation issues at UNZA's Great East Road campus, involves servicemen and women working continuously to restore the sewer and water systems. Mr. Haamaundu noted that the absence of students from hostels will significantly expedite the works by preventing effluent from entering the system. The Ministry of Defence, through the Zambia National Service, is committed to delivering durable rehabilitation works, aligning with President Hakainde Hichilema's directive for quality construction. The goal is to ensure the infrastructure lasts a lifetime, anticipating students' swift return to campus.
