CHITAMBO, Central Province – President Hakainde Hichilema has announced a significant commitment to formalise and enhance safety in gold mining operations within Chitambo district, Central Province, promising government provision of essential equipment if his administration is re-elected. The pronouncement, made during a recent public engagement, signals a renewed focus on empowering local miners and ensuring that Zambia's rich mineral resources contribute directly to community development and national prosperity. The President's pledge comes amidst growing calls for better regulation and support for artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) across the country. Historically, gold mining in regions like Chitambo has often been characterised by informal practices, limited access to modern equipment, and significant safety hazards. This has not only posed risks to miners' lives but also led to environmental degradation and revenue leakages. The government's proposed intervention seeks to address these challenges by facilitating access to appropriate technology and promoting adherence to safety and environmental standards. Formalising the gold mining sector in Chitambo is expected to yield multiple benefits. Beyond improving safety, it will enable better monitoring of production, facilitate fair pricing for miners, and ensure that mineral royalties and taxes contribute to the national treasury. This move aligns with the New Dawn government's broader economic diversification agenda, which seeks to move beyond traditional copper reliance and unlock the potential of other mineral resources, including gold, manganese, and gemstones. Local communities in Chitambo have long expressed aspirations for greater participation and benefit from the gold deposits in their area. The provision of equipment, coupled with potential training and regulatory frameworks, could transform livelihoods, create sustainable employment opportunities, and stimulate local economies.
