Zambia's Guy Scott, who was Africa's first white head of state in decades, has died at 82
LUSAKA, Zambia – Zambia is mourning the passing of Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, a distinguished politician who made history as Africa's first white head of state in over two decades, at the age of 82. Dr. Scott, who served as Vice President from 2011 to 2014, briefly assumed the acting presidency in 2014 following the untimely death of then-President Michael Sata. His tenure, though short, was pivotal in ensuring a peaceful and constitutional transition of power during a sensitive period for the nation. Born on June 1, 1944, in Livingstone, then Northern Rhodesia, Dr. Scott was a Zambian citizen of British descent who dedicated his life to the country of his birth. A Cambridge-educated economist, he initially pursued a successful career in agriculture, managing Walkover Estates which exported fresh produce to the United Kingdom. His foray into politics began after the end of Kenneth Kaunda's one-party rule in 1991, where he served as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. In this role, he earned widespread recognition for his crucial efforts in averting a national food crisis during the severe regional drought of 1992 by orchestrating emergency maize imports. Dr. Scott's political journey saw him align with Michael Sata, becoming a trusted ally within the Patriotic Front (PF) party. Their partnership culminated in 2011 when Sata won the presidency, and Dr. Scott was sworn in as Vice President, becoming the first white Zambian to hold that office since independence in 1964. His brief but impactful period as acting president from October 2014 to January 2015 cemented his unique place in African political history, marking him as the first white head of state on the continent since F.W. de Klerk of South Africa in 1994. Despite constitutional provisions that barred him from contesting the subsequent presidential election due to his parents not being Zambian by birth, Dr. Scott meticulously oversaw the electoral process that led to Edgar Lungu's presidency.
